Boosting Language During The Holidays

The winter holiday is a great opportunity to boost language skills with your children!  Even though this year may look different than years past, children are excited about the variety of activities and there is something fun for the whole family!

Here are some fun holiday language boosting activities!

  1. Christmas tree: If your family celebrates Christmas, looking for the perfect Christmas tree is an excellent time to boost language. Whether you are looking for an artificial tree or a real Douglas Fir, boosting language can happen anywhere!

    • Talk about the different sizes of trees (e.g., big, small, tall, short)

    • Describe how the trees feel (e.g., rough, prickly, sticky, pointy)

    • Discuss how the tree smells and how you want to decorate your tree in your home

  2. Wrapping presents: Wrapping gifts is a great way to boost language and improve executive functioning skills.

    • Talk about the materials you need to wrap presents (e.g., wrapping paper, gift bags, tissue paper, tape, scissors)

    • Discuss the steps to wrapping gifts (e.g., first you lay out the wrapping paper face down, then you place the gift on top of the wrapping paper, etc.)

    • Describe the different types of gifts (e.g., small, big, round, heavy, light, tall)

  3. Gingerbread houses: Making gingerbread houses is a fun activity to boost language over the holidays.

  • Describe the different types of materials you will need (e.g., candy, icing, gingerbread houses)

  • Review the steps needed to make a gingerbread house (e.g., first you put the icing on the edges of the house and then you stick the pieces of the gingerbread house together, etc.)

  • Discuss the different types of candy you can use to decorate your gingerbread house (e.g., colors, shapes, taste, smell)

At your next teletherapy session, show us your holiday decorations if you have some! Your children will love telling us about their decorations and showing and sharing their creations with us!
