Cat, hat, mat, rat!

Hug, bug… your turn!

Rhyming is an important preliteracy skill that is under the umbrella term “phonological awareness.” Phonological awareness is identifying and manipulating units of spoken language (e.g., rhyming, isolating, segmenting, blending and manipulating sounds).

Phonemic awareness is an early predictor of a child’s reading and writing success. But, what is phonemic awareness? Phonemic awareness is the ability for children to be able to hear, identify and manipulate individual speech sounds in words (blending individual sounds into a word or breaking apart a word into its individual sounds).

Reading is something we do every day. It is imperative that young learners understand that spoken words are made up of individual sounds. There are 44 individual speech sounds in English. Before we introduce children to sounds that are represented by letters, children need to take sounds apart at a listening and auditory level.

At TALK, we teach individual sounds and how they are manipulated in order for children to be successful readers and spellers! We show clients how these speech sounds come together to build up words. That is what we call phonemic awareness!

Good news – these skills can be taught and learned; however, proficient reading requires many skills. TALK runs fun, engaging, and effective reading groups for all ages through a specific developmental phonological awareness hierarchy lead by our talented speech-language pathologists. Our reading groups use multisensory instruction throughout lessons. We incorporate Orton-Gillingham® methodology, which is a scientifically proven method of teaching reading. A true multisensory lesson includes visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic pathways. The more senses you use, the more likely learners will retain and recall the information.

Learn about these skills in our structured reading groups! Come clap, tap, and play with sounds with us! To sign up your child for a reading group please call our Burlingame office at 650-344-9961, our Danville office 925-725-4632, or email us at peninfo@talkpeninsula.com
