How to Use Books

Books are an amazing therapy tool that are incredibly versatile and always on hand! Chances are, you have tons of books lying around. Not only do books encourage an early relationship between kids and reading, but they are a quick and easy way to work on many areas of speech and language!

Here are a few ways we improve skills language using books:

Receptive Language

  • Identify colors, nouns, verbs, and other concepts

  • Following directions (“Point to the blue fish and red crab”)

  • Prepositions (“Which crab is under the shark?”)

  • Sequencing (learning about what happened first, in the middle, and last)

Expressive Language

  • Use of nouns and verbs

  • Pronouns

  • Sentence structure/syntax (“The boy is walking outside”)

  • Story tell and story retell

  • Make predictions

Social Communication

  • Identify feelings and the cause of feelings

  • Perspective taking

Articulation

  • Practice saying pictures with the target sound

Phonological Awareness

  • Rhyming

  • Pre-literacy skills

We love using books to work on speech and language!
